Meet Your Tailors

Lead Tailor: Joy Gondwe


Joy was born and raised in Blantyre, Malawi.  After dropping out of school during her last year of high school, Joy moved to neighboring Zambia and began pursuing a career as a tailor.  She was educated at Waddington College in Lusaka, Zambia.

Upon returning to Blantyre over 8 years ago, she began her own tailoring business.  After years working of alone from her sister's home, she now operates her own tailoring shop where she employs 3 full-time tailors. after receiving her training in neighboring Zambia.  In 2017, she added the role of Mwayi Lead Tailor to her resume.

When she's not designing and sewing, she's busy raising her two teenaged children, Paul and Gracia.  


Apprentice Tailors:


Dorice, 29, from Mwanza - "I want my children to be in school, to grow up educated.  That's why I work so hard. I want them to be independent, so I can depend on them in the future."


Laina, 22, from Chiradzulu - "I want (our customers) to know me as Laina, a woman who has come to Mwayi and who dedicates her time to making clothes for them.  I'm jovial, I like laughing.  I like making friends." 


Rasheeda, 20, from Chilimba - "My mother died when I was a young girl. My aunty raised me. She told me 'work hard so that you can stand on your own.' She encouraged me to study people, the people I work with or live with, so that I can know how to work with different people and how to handle them and be on good terms with them."
